Cruciality of God’s Presence

Pastor Julius Suubi, 04/08/2013

“Today is better than yesterday, and tomorrow is going to be better than today.” ~Pr Julius Suubi.

I have been saying “Today is better for decades.” I need to think about tomorrow too.

The most difficult job to be on earth is to be a pastor, “you people” are very hard to lead. We are sheep. Among cows, goats and sheep, the sheep is the most foolish. It has weak memory. Cows remember where to get water. When you stand up, they know it’s time to feed. You need to kick the sheep to get them moving. And when they fall down, they don’t get up themselves. That’s why pastors have to keep preaching the same things to the flock.

Mar 3:13-17 Jesus went up on a mountainside and called to him those he wanted, and they came to him. (14) He appointed twelve–designating them apostles–that they might be with him and that he might send them out to preach (15) and to have authority to drive out demons. (16) These are the twelve he appointed: Simon (to whom he gave the name Peter); (17) James son of Zebedee and his brother John (to them he gave the name Boanerges, which means Sons of Thunder);

If there is anything we should be desperately craving for, it’s the presence of God.

Gen 1:26-28 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” (27) So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. (28) God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”

We are created

  1. To be like God.
  2. To be in His image and the likeness of God.
  3. To have dominion

To be like God, we must spend quality and quantity time in the presence of God. When we spend time with God, we begin to think / speak like him.

From the passage in Mark, we see God calls them firs to be with him, to have a relationship with him. In Exodus, God first brought the Israelites to himself. His goal was not first to take them to the Promised Land. God’s desire for all of us is to spend time with him.

There are voids in the human being that cannot be fulfilled with money or things. What brings fulfilment is God’s presence. The world is looking for what we have but they are looking at it in a different want.

How much time do we spend with God? To some of us, our prayer time is like we are making a costly long distance call. It is free to make a call to heaven. Intimacy brings pregnancy, spiritual pregnancy. Intimacy between husband and wife brings baby. Intimacy is taken place in a secret place but the result is clearly seen in public. The impact of spending time with God is seen by everyone.

Serving the Lord is important but it has to come later, it must come out from a relationship with God.

Mar 3:14-15 And he ordained twelve, that they should be with him, and that he might send them forth to preach, (15) And to have power to heal sicknesses, and to cast out devils:

When we spend time with God, we receive the power and anointing for our ministry.

Pr Julius was told by God that if he asked for money, he’d be given crumbs. But if he spends time with God, God would command others to give and nobody could refuse God.

How much time do we spend with God? Do we take time to fast? With so many good food in Malaysia, it takes great faith to fast. Malaysia is like the land of milk and honey with the great variety of good. Don’t eat from Jan to Dec. Fasting is good. There are some unwanted fat in our body. We eliminate them through fasting.

The Bible said when Jesus came from the river Jordan, he was full of the power of the Holy Spirit. He then fasted 40 days. Christians have the Holy Spirit but not all have the power of the Holy Spirit. We need to 禁食. (fast, Pr Julius said that in Cantonese!)

Methuselah lived the longest in the Bible. He lived 969 years, longer than Adam. We don’t read about what he did besides having children. The Bible mentioned the ministry of his children but not him.

When we spend time with God, we received power to heal the sick, the cast our demons and to transform lives! People are dying. People need the Lord.

Spending time in the presence of God changes our identities. Maybe the devil has given us our identity of a sick person or a failure. Some people eat medicine like they are eating groundnuts. They pack medicine before they pack their clothes when they travel. Pr. Julius said he was the chairman of the Daily Sickness Board. Some of us are directors or general secretaries. He told us to tell 魔鬼 (the devil) to resign from the board! Our identity is going to change because of presence of God. Simon (shaky) is changed into Peter (the rock.) No longer shall we be known as a failure. Pr. Julius proclaimed that our identity is going to change today. God is going to change the identity of our children. Not by might, not by power but by the Spirit of the Lord! We are children of God. (Tears are forming for me at this point.) Pr Julius said God changed him from someone who is ugly into a 后生靓仔 (handsome young man).

Ask the people around us. “What do you see?” God is giving us a new name. God is giving a new identity to our family.

Exo 33:14-16 The LORD replied, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” (15) Then Moses said to him, “If your Presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here. (16) How will anyone know that you are pleased with me and with your people unless you go with us? What else will distinguish me and your people from all the other people on the face of the earth?”

Presence here, פּנים
pânı̂ym = faces (plural). God will turn his face to us to be our healer, provider, protector. We have 1 God and he does all things.

(I turned on the webcam in the notebook to take picture of the very adorable baby girl in front of me, just to realize the notebook doesn’t have a back camera.

We face challenges and difficulties but we will overcome then in the presence of God. Not just for us but also for people we encounter.
