Discipleship Essential

Judges 2:7-12

Christianity is one generation away from extinction. It is passed down from one generation to another.

Discipleship begins at home. It begins with ourselves and our families. The light that shines the farthest shine the brightest at home.

“The be plainly instructed and consider well the main end of your life and studies is to know God and Jesus Christ.” Veritas Christo et ecclesiae (Truth for Christ and the Church), Motto of Harvard, founded in 1636.

“Every student shall consider ye main end of his study.to know God in Jesus Christ and answerably to lead a Godly sober life” Lux et Veritas (Light and Truth), Yale University, founder 1701

Today, both establishments seem to have forgotten about God.

“Gone out of business. Didn’t know what our business was.” University Christian Church, NY, 1963

What is the business of the church?

“And Jesus came up and spoke to them saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.” (Matthew 28:18)

Jesus has all authority. And he gave us the commandment (Matthew 28:19, 20). The verb includes go, make disciples, baptizing, and teaching. The primary verb in the original Greek is make disciples. Go, baptizing and teaching are to support the making of disciples. They are verbal participles.

What is discipleship? Disciple0making is the process of bringing people to Christ, and building them up in the faith toward Christ-likeness, for the purpose of spiritual manipulation, resulting in the glory of God.

  • It takes time
  • It begins with connecting people to Christ – it doesn’t begin with someone who is already a Christian.

1         The Greatest Commandment

Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’ (Matthew 22:37-39)

Jesus is our first love. Everything else we do is because we love him.

When we build a factory, we must first know the product.

1.1         Mindset: Begin with the end in mind

  • Product before process
  • Purpose before programs
  • Objectives before plans

Stages of Spiritual Journey – Christ-likeness

  1. Spiritually Dead (lost) – Eph 2:1-5
  2. Infant – 1 Pet 2:2-3
  3. Immature – 1 Cor 3:1-4; Heb 5:12-14
  4. Mature – 1 Jn 2:12-13
  5. Fishers of Men (Make disciples) – 1 Jn 2:12-13

How do we know a person is spiritually mature? We can tell from our responses when some things go wrong.

2         Discipleship Essentials – the process

  • Big picture
  • Intentional
  • Relationship (accountability, love)
  • Modelling
  • OJT – most effective
  • Vision casting (we need to have the vision to multiplication and the key to multiplication is discipleship)
  • Spirit-filled life / prayer

2.1         Modelling for Multiplication

  • I do, you watch, we talk
  • I do, you help, we talk
  • You do, I help, we talk
  • You do, someone watch, you talk
  • You do, someone help, you talk

2.2         Philosophy of Training

  • Learn best as you teach
  • Grow best as you serve
  • Teach what you know
  • Model what you teach
  • OJT

We impress people from a distance but we impact lives from up close.

2.3         The Discipleship Process of CCF

  • Engage the community and build a relationship.
  • Evangelize – share the good news.
  • Edify – build them up.
  • Equip –class
  • Empower

2.4         Discipleship Essentials

  • Reliance on the Holy Spirit
  • Spirit-filled life – Christianity is a relationship. If we do not disciple our children, the world will disciple them. Our first discipleship group should be our family.
Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. (Deuteronomy 6: 5, 4)
  • Vision Casting
Where there is no revelation, people cast off restraint; but blessed is the one who heeds wisdom’s instruction (Proverbs 29:18)
Why do we need a vision? A vision, defined with clarity, painted clearly, and cast with passion so that all will see and comprehend the direction.
With a vision, we have the passion. Excitement catches on.
  • Infectious Passion
  • Deep Relationship
Allows us to ask difficult questions.
Food unites. It breaks the barriers and bring people together.
And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, 25 not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching. (Hebrew 10:24, 25)
  • Intentional Modeling
For Ezra had devoted himself to the study and observance of the Law of the Lord, and to teaching its decrees and laws in Israel. (Ezra 7:10)
To deliberately study, practice in life and teach.
For you yourselves know how you ought to follow our example. We were not idle when we were with you, 8 nor did we eat anyone’s food without paying for it. On the contrary, we worked night and day, labouring and toiling so that we would not be a burden to any of you. 9 We did this, not because we do not have the right to such help, but in order to offer ourselves as a model for you to imitate. 10 For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: “The one who is unwilling to work shall not eat.” (2 Thessalonians 3:7-9)
    3 areas

    • Character development
    • Competency upgrade
    • Team chemistry
  • OJT
And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others. (2 Timothy 2:2)
