LEAD2016 – Day 1 Session 2

Pastor Joey Bonifacio, Victory Church.

It’s important for Christians to take note.

Manila has a population of 12 million, swelling up to 16 million in the morning. Pastor Bonifacio’s church has 167 services. Many members are young. Young people are the spirit of the church.

The church mission statement is

To honour God by establishing Christ-centred, Spirit empowered, socially responsible churches and campus ministries in every nation.

One the job of a leader is to empower others.

1         The Devil

The devil works in several ways.

  1. Temptation
  2. Deception
  3. Condemnation
  4. Accusation

Every time we question the Word of God, we are tempted to doubt the Word of God. If he can tempt us, he will go to the second stage. If the devil can tempt us, he will try to convince us.

When we are deceived, we will be condemned by our sins.

The devil’s mission to kill, steal and destroy. Why are we still alive then? The devil wants to box us in fear so that we become ineffective. When we are condemned, we build our own box / prison.

By the time Adam and Even sinned against God, Adam accused Eve. Eve accused he serpent. When we get to accusation, we are no longer enjoying God’s given life.

2         The Holy Spirit

Who is the Holy Spirit?

  1. Teacher
  2. Conscience
  3. Comforter
  4. Counsellor

The first thing He will do is to teach us how to pray. Prayer is our way of acknowledging that without God, things don’t work.

The Holy Spirit is God. He speaks

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (Acts 1:8)

The Spirit (dunamis) is where the word dynamite came from. Dynamite contains nitro-glycerine, which is so volatile it could not be used until Nobel found a way to use it. From then on, building train tracks no longer takes weeks and months using picks and shovels but mere days with dynamite.

Jesus said He would send us a counsellor. We will receive power (Spirit empowered) to bear witnesses (for the purpose of making disciples) in Jerusalem (in the city where you live) and finally to the ends of the earth.

Pastor Joey was walking Vito one day, he felt God asked him whether he loves Vito. He said yes. God then asked him whether he love Vito long enough to bark to him, to eat his good, to take a bath every 5 days, to go on all four? God let him know that He is like the human and Pastor Joey is like a dog. God loves us so much He came to our level. The Holy Spirit speaks to us. Are we quiet enough to hear His voice?

3         Human

What should we do?

  1. Pray
  2. Renew our Minds
  3. Convict
  4. Acquit

Pastor Joey’s mother grew up in a Christian background. It makes it very hard for her to become Jesus. The Holy Spirit convicted her. The Holy Spirit speaks to us. Do we hear Him?

We are going to meet different people with different personality that we cannot engage them. But the Holy Spirit can empower us to do so.

One of his church’s mission is to reach those in poverty. Poverty is not about the lack of material things. Poverty is about having no hope and no dignity. To help people in poverty is not merely about giving them things. We restore their hopes and dignity. We help them with education, medical assistance, etc.

We need to figure out the people in our city. Don’t just reach out to our mothers and brothers. Witness in our Jerusalem and then Judea and Samaria (people around us of a different culture.)

It takes every shape and form for us to reach the entire population of the world. Sometimes we don’t need to be able to reach the Samaritans but we can have a Samaritan friend who can reach them.

The power of the Holy Spirit is not weird. It’s very simple.

We sometimes wait for institutions or organizations to do things when we have the power ourselves to do it today!

The Holy Spirit wants us to have joy.

Sometimes we do not encounter the Holy Spirit, it is because we do not put ourselves into position that we are needed.

The Devil’s Tactics Who is the Holy Spirit? What You Should Do
Temptation Teacher Pray
Deception Conscience Renew your mind
Condemnation Comforter Convict
Accusation Counsellor Acquit
