LEAD2016 – Day 3 Session 1

Pastor Gary Skinner, Watoto Church

The pathway to great leadership is through the door of servanthood.

In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature[a] God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;  rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature[b] of a servant,
being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross! Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (Philippians 2:5-11)

The pathway to be lifted up is to go down. Jesus laid down all his power to become a servant. That’s why He was exalted. When His disciples had a dispute who was greater, he told him the least among them is the greatest. Jesus also washed their feet.

Servanthood brings kingdom of authority.

In Acts 17, Paul went to Mars Hill and saw the unknown God. He told the people he knew the unknown God and he wanted to introduce God to them. Pastor Gary was told by God that He doesn’t need to be served.

God told Pastor Gary that the only way to serve Him is by serving others. It changed his life. One phrase used in Watoto Church is “how can we serve you?”

When someone with a broken heart cries, God always hears from and His response is to send someone.

God called Gary and his wife Marilyn to build a church in the midst of chaos in Gulu, Northern Uganda. They met a community leader, who told them 3 problems. One, as many of 35,000 children were abducted. Young boys were made to kill their own villagers. Young girls came with their babies. They are not welcomed. Two, healthcare. Three, prostitution. It was not about a building. It was about restoring hope. It took months before they gained the trust of the children. We can transform people by the power of forgiveness. Someone came along to help restructure the healthcare system. Marilyn put up an ad to help single mothers. 10,000 came to look for help. Former generals of the Lord’s Resistance Army came. Some have received Jesus and are helping the very women they enslaved in the past. Many women’s lives were changed by the love of Christ through normal people.

Marilyn stared the Living Hope Ministry, giving back dignity to the women. When we are bitten by a snake, we deal with the poison in our body, not to chase after the snake. The women were shown a dirty and crumpled currency note and a clean one, they were asked which one is more valuable. They realize they are as valuable. An abusive mother sought forgiveness from her children. They prayed together.

Less people are dying from HIV with the new medicine. The infection rate skyrocketed as there are more living carriers to pass it on. And people do not see them as a death sentence, so their sexual live is more out of control. Many women who are advanced in age, with children and HIV positive were abandoned by their husbands.

They need education, a job (a steady income), a place to live, medical care.

The best school in the world has always been church schools. They build schools to educate children to rebuild the nation in the future.

They have a soap making program for the women to sell the soap. They plan to create 200 jobs for these women this year. They requested help from international businessmen to work together with local businesses to create more jobs. It’s not about hand down but a hand up, the restoring of dignity.

These people are living in slumps, with no water supplies and sewage system. Rats and cockroaches ran rampant. They worked with the community to rebuild the slumps. They also build a Watoto Homes house 8 children each at USD30k.

They also set up clinics.

The pathway to greatness is servanthood in humility.

God has been restoring what the church has lost. Martin Luther nailed 95 theses to the door of the church. It brought back justification by faith. It revolutionized the church. Missions changed the church and changed the world forever. The Pentecostal movement brought about multiplication of the church through the move of the Holy Spirit. In the 1970s, the Jesus movement made its mark. In 1980s, the significance of small group was rediscovered. In the 1990s and 200s, the Christian music surged. The most popular music in the world today are Christian music.

Besides all that, Pastor Gary suggested to add holistic ministry of servanthood.
